The Poverty Forum, an event designed to facilitate a community conversation about poverty featuring keynote speaker Melissa Harris-Perry, will be Aug. 8 at the Lyric Theatre & Cultural Arts Center, 300 East Third Street. A 5:30 p.m. reception will be followed by the program at 7:30 p.m.
Harris-Perry is an author, a professor of political science at Tulane University, host of MSNBC's Melissa Harris-Perry and a columnist for The Nation.
Proceeds raised from The Poverty Forum will support the Community Action Council's efforts to combat poverty.

Registration is underway for the 2013 Lexington Walk to End Alzheimer's. The association's largest local fundraiser will be Sept. 29 at the Fifth Third Pavilion in downtown Lexington.
"Our goal is $177,000 this year, so we are encouraging participants to register early so that they have ample time to raise funds for the September event," said Teri Shirk, executive director of the Kentucky and Southern Indiana Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association.

Funds raised by the Walk to End Alzheimer's support research for treatments and a cure, as well as support services. The Greater Kentucky and Southern Indiana Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association provides services to 125 counties across Kentucky and Southern Indiana, including support groups, caregiver training and a 24/7 Helpline (1-800-272-3900).
