Lexington’s coolest event, the Polar Plunge for Special Olympics, returns Feb. 20

The Polar Plunge for Special Olympics hits the water Feb. 20 at the Texas Roadhouse, 3029 Richmond Road.

Registration begins at 9 a.m. Opening ceremonies are at 11 a.m., with the first plungers hitting the water about 30 minutes later. Plunge participants, some in costume, who have committed to raise a minimum of $75 ($50 for plungers younger than 18), will take a chilly dip into a pool. Afterward, the post-plunge bash and awards ceremony will take place at Texas Roadhouse.

Participants may pick up brochures at Texas Roadhouse, Raising Canes or Republic Bank locations or call Special Olympics Kentucky at 1-800-633-7403. Participants may also register at

All participants will receive a Polar Plunge T-shirt and may earn additional prizes by raising more money. The top three fundraisers will have their names entered into a drawing for a $1,000 travel certificate from AAA Travel.

This year’s event will offer two other options: Too Chicken to Plunge (register, raise money, but you don’t have to jump) and Toss Your Boss (for $250 – and with your boss’s permission – you can have him or her thrown into the pool).

An early check-in will be held at Texas Roadhouse for participants who have raised all of their money online or who are ready to turn in their money and wish to avoid lines on plunge day. Preregistration will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Feb. 18.
