A Fayette County grand jury has indicted a Lexington towing company owner accused of overcharging customers.
The indictment, released Tuesday, charges George Michael Winchester, owner of Winchester Towing, with six counts of theft by deception — three felonies and three misdemeanors — for allegedly overcharging customers. Winchester also is charged with three felony counts of filing or making a false tax return, two felony counts of failing to file a tax return, 21 counts of failing to obtain a receipt for vehicles, and 11 counts of prohibited acts by a tow truck service or operator.
His arraignment has been scheduled for May 3.
Winchester, 48, was arrested March 12 after police said they had received dozens of complaints that he overcharged customers for towing and impounding. He has been free on $3,470 bond.
Winchester has said that if he overcharged customers, it was by mistake.
