All lanes of a stretch of East New Circle Road were shut down Tuesday after a report of a natural gas leak, causing a heavy traffic backup, according to the Lexington Traffic Management Center.

The road was reopened just before 6 p.m.

Both directions of the New Circle were closed between Industry Road and Floyd Drive, locking up traffic just before rush hour. Traffic officials urged drivers to avoid East New Circle Road between Winchester Road and Bryan Avenue.

Lexington Fire Battalion Chief Joe Best said construction equipment had hit a gas line.
