Pedestrian killed; driver leaves scene before returning

Herald-Leader

A pedestrian was struck and killed late Thursday night at Winchester and Elkhorn roads in the Hamburg area, according to Lexington police.

The driver, a 25-year-old Winchester woman, initially drove off, but she later returned and made contact with an officer in a nearby restaurant parking lot, according to police. No charges have been filed, and the driver’s name hasn’t been released.

Police said the man was crossing the road against the traffic signal when the inbound vehicle hit him just before 10 p.m. Police said the driver had the green light and she told officers that she didn’t see the pedestrian.

Eddie Joe Carroll, 44, died from multiple blunt force trauma in the crash, according to the Fayette County coroner.

The coroner said Carroll was homeless and lived in a nearby encampment.

The portion of Winchester Road at Elkhorn was shut down for several hours overnight, WKYT reported. Police said they are still investigating.
