Roots & Heritage

It started as a neighborhood street fair in 1989; now this event draws thousands for a celebration of black culture, featuring concerts, arts and crafts, a parade and more, near Short Street and Elm Tree Lane. The festival runs through Sunday. (Rootsfestky.com)

In the mood for a fright ...

Don't miss ScareFest, a horror and paranormal gathering at Lexington Convention Center's Heritage Hall, 430 West Vine Street, through Sunday. Horror and fantasy stars will include George A. Romero, director of Night of the Living Dead, and the car from the movie Christine. $30 Friday, $35 Saturday, $20 Sunday, free ages 10 and younger with adult. (Scarefestcon.com)

15th annual Dog Paddle

Take your canine friend for a swim from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Woodland Aquatic Center, 190 Old Park Avenue; $10-$25 depending on what time your dog swims. Proceeds go toward improving the city's dog parks and to Lexington Humane Society. You can register for a time at Lexingtonhumanesociety.org.
