43rd District girls: LexCath beats Dunbar to make finals

Sisters might fight.

They might bicker.

But when it comes to the post-season, they play for each other.

That's what Octavia Wilson did Wednesday night in scoring a career-high 21 points in 21 minutes for Lexington Catholic in the Knights' 61-58 win over host Paul Dunbar in the 43rd District semifinals.

"We wanted to win it for our seniors, and I especially wanted to win it for my sister," Wilson said of her big sister, senior Maggie. "I don't want her season to end."

The eighth-grader had a career-best 13 points by halftime. As a left-hander, she was able to make easy drives to the basket.

"I wasn't expecting this at all," said Octavia, who made 8 of her 10 shots. "It was all or nothing, so I knew I had to go out and play my hardest."

Dunbar was dominant early behind junior Ebony Rowe, who had 13 of the Bulldogs' first 15 points and helped give them a five-point lead early in the second quarter.

But Catholic's pressure caused problems for the Bulldogs, and Octavia came off the bench and put on her show. She scored 11 points of a 20-8 run, and the Knights led 32-26 at the half.

Dunbar chipped away at Catholic's lead and tied it up twice before the Wilsons took over together. The sister act scored 16 of the Knights' 29 points in the second half.

Maggie finished with 16 points for the Knights (16-13), who snapped a three-game losing streak. Shaneque McGhee added 12 points, including six of eight free throws in the final 1:30 to help hold off the Bulldogs.

Six Rowe points in the final 30 seconds helped Dunbar get back to within a point, 59-58, with 10 seconds to play, but Octavia made two free throws to extend the lead back to three points.

A three-point heave by the Bulldogs' Erin Lucas fell short as the clock expired.

"I'm so proud of this group," Coach Mike Sowers said. "We had a chance to win at the end, and that's all a coach can ask. I'd called my last timeout, and we still got a pretty good shot."

Rowe had 27 points and 21 rebounds for the Bulldogs, who outrebounded Catholic 48-27. Shomari Kendrick added 10 points and 17 boards.
