Henson to seek 2nd term on council

Eleventh District councilwoman Peggy Henson, 54, announced that she will seek election to the Urban County Council.

Henson was appointed by Mayor Jim Newberry to fill the unexpired term of councilman Richard Moloney, who resigned in January 2008 to take a job with the state. She was elected to a full term in November 2008.

Henson has spent much of her time on the council working with Building Inspection and Code Enforcement, correcting property violations in rental and owner-occupied housing.

Unsafe housing conditions are "not just a problem around the university," she said. "It is a situation found throughout the entire city."

Improving water quality through better sanitary and storm sewers also has been one of her priorities.

Since 1983, Henson has worked for Employment Solutions, which works to find employment for people with mental and physical handicaps, ex-offenders and people coming off welfare. She is assistant director of job placement.

Henson is a graduate of Lafayette High School and has taken classes at Lexington Community College and Bluegrass Community and Technical College.
