Mayor unhurt while wrecking city-owned Camry

Mayor Jim Newberry was involved in a wreck on Tates Creek Road last Friday while driving a city-owned vehicle. A police report said the mayor's car rear-ended a car in front of him about 7:42 a.m., near the intersection of Cochran Road and Sunset Drive.

There were no injuries. The name of the driver of the other car was not released.

City spokeswoman Susban Straub said the mayor was alone in the 2007 Camry when the accident happened. He was not talking on his cell phone or texting, she said.

Asked if the accident was caused by unexplained acceleration, a problem that has caused Toyota to recall certain of its cars, Straub said that was not the cause. The car had been checked soon after the car manufacturer issued its recall notices in January.

An estimate of the damage is being prepared by Green's Toyota. "We had to take it to the dealership and get an estimate, like anybody else," Straub said.
