Gun locks to be given away after Lexington boy's accidental death

Lexington police will give away free gun locks beginning Monday.

Police spokeswoman Sherelle Roberts said the locks were donated by ChildSafe, a nationwide program promoting safe gun storage and handling.

She said the department received several hundred locks. The locks will be given away from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily at the police department, 150 East Main Street, until they are gone.

The cable-style locks, which require a key to operate, prevent guns from being loaded.

The giveaway follows an accidental shooting that killed a 9-year-old Lexington boy.

TaShawn Watson was pronounced dead at the University of Kentucky Hospital at 4:49 p.m. Tuesday. Officials said TaShawn was playing with his father's handgun, which he found in the garage of their home on Folkstone Drive.
