The audience at Lexington's Junior League Horse Show saw a different side of the Bluegrass state on Thursday night when a competitor performed using circus wagons built in Lexington by craftsman Joel Brown.
Michele Macfarlane and her American Saddlebred horses used the elaborate wagons designed by Brown, a carriage restoration expert, and won the Concours D'Elegance class of the 74th annual show. The show, which concludes Saturday, is the first leg of the American Saddlebred Triple Crown.
Brown completed the wagons for Macfarlane and her San Diego-based Scripps Miramar Ranch last year, and she showed them in the Tournament of Roses parade earlier this year.
Ashley Hallock of Scripps Miramar wore one of the authentic 1930s circus costumes Thursday and maneuvered a miniature wagon with three miniature horses.
"This is the first time they've offered this class, so it's exciting," Hallock said.
