A Lexington family's home sustained heavy damage and their dog was killed in a fire Tuesday night.
Firefighters were called to 1174 Indian Mound Road just before 6 p.m., after neighbors reported seeing smoke coming from the roof, said Battalion Chief Randy Gilliam.
Firefighters found "heavy fire involvement in the garage that had spread to the attic," Gilliam said.
It took about half an hour to get the fire out, he said, as white smoke continued to billow from the eaves. "There's heavy damage throughout the structure," he said.

Most of the family that lives in the home was on vacation in Florida, but a man who lives there told fire investigators that he left for work at 7 a.m., then came home at 10 a.m. to let the dog out. He returned as firefighters were knocking down the flames.
The man declined to be interviewed for this article.
