Central Baptist Church Child Care celebrated its 40th anniversary Sunday with a special celebration during the church's services, including the recognition of Betty Morrison, the program's founder and first director, and a performance by the children currently enrolled.

The program today in many ways resembles the one that opened in 1970, said Kim Newman, its current director. It still stresses education — preparing children for kindergarten — as well as good manners, sharing, kindness and other social skills, Newman said

Seventy-eight children from 65 families are enrolled, she said, and not all of the families are members of Central Baptist Church, which is at 110 Wilson Downing Road, across from Fayette Mall.

The program accepts children from 6 weeks to 5 years old. "We choose to stay smaller because we feel that smaller sizes allow for greater quality," Newman said.

"We have a family atmosphere," she said. "We really try to keep the families involved in everything that we do."
