Anderson County Coroner Brian Ritchie said Helton accidentally shot himself after climbing into a deer stand and then hoisting a .30-30 caliber rifle up to the stand.
The gun's trigger caught on a limb and discharged, wounding Helton in the neck, Ritchie said.
A friend who was hunting in another area reported Ritchie missing about 9:30 p.m. Sunday, Ritchie said. Helton was found still harnessed in the stand.
Helton was a senior sales associate for Biomet Orthopedics in Lexington, Ritchie said. Helton's identity was not released until his parents in North Carolina had been notified of the death Monday morning.
