Gas cost an average of $4.01 per gallon in Kentucky on Thursday, said Christopher Oakford, spokesman for AAA Blue Grass. The average price reached its highest point — $4.05 per gallon — on July 21, 2008.
Oakford said the recent spike is due in part to Mississippi River flooding, which affects many crude-oil refineries. "The price of crude oil is really responsive to perceived threats," he said.
Historically, $4 per gallon is the threshold at which people start re-evaluating their driving habits, which could lessen demand and reduce prices, Oakford said.
