A Norfolk Southern Railway freight train struck and killed a man at 6:30 p.m. Thursday near Virginia Avenue, Lexington police said.
The victim, whose named was not released, was pronounced dead at the scene, police Lt. Scott Blakely said.
Blakely said he did not believe the man was a student, based on preliminary evidence. University of Kentucky students sometimes walk along the tracks where the incident occurred, just north of the Virginia Avenue overpass. The victim might have been a homeless person, police said.
"We believe he (the victim) was passed out on the tracks," Blakely said.
According to Blakely, the train crew sounded a warning but couldn't stop in time.
The incident will be investigated by Norfolk & Southern's investigative unit, Blakely said. Lexington police do not have jurisdiction in such cases, he said.
