Sanitary sewer improvements are coming soon to the Winchester Road/Interstate 75 area, and the public is invited to attend a meeting to discuss the changes.
The project will involve eliminating four pump stations, which push sewage through upward-flowing sewer lines as it travels toward a wastewater treatment plant. The pump stations will be replaced with one, larger pump station.
Because of Lexington's hilly terrain, it has more than 80 pump stations that help transport sewage in areas where the flow of gravity is not enough.
Citizens will be able to review and comment on the proposal, which is known as the Expansion Area 2A Project, as well as its potential impacts and alternatives, at a meeting at 6 p.m. June 28 at Spencerian College, 1575 Winchester Rd.
The Division of Water Quality has applied to the Kentucky Department for Environmental Protection for a low interest loan to help pay for the project. Funding will also come from a $3.1 million grant from the state, the release stated.
