Lexington wants to help residents prevent home delivery of unwanted Christmas catalogs, multiple telephone books and junk mail.
The city's divisions of environmental policy and waste management launched the Opt Out Program to help residents find Web sites where they can stop mail delivery of publications or offers. On one city Web page at www.lexingtonky.gov/optout, Lexington provides links to catalogchoice.com and about five other Web services for reducing or eliminating catalogs, phonebooks, direct mail and credit card offers..
Users can select preferences at each site. For example, using yellowpagesoptout.com, residents can choose which phonebook they want to receive and how often. Other phonebook deliveries can be stopped.
The city urged people to try different sites to find those that suit their needs.
