"There are some inconsistencies in the story," Hart said.
The victim, whom Hart said called police on his cell phone, was taken to University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital.
Hart said the victim was in stable condition soon after the shooting and was preparing to go into surgery to determine whether the bullet passed all the way through or was still lodged in the his cheek.
He said police did not have any suspects as of about 10:30 p.m.
