A public meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Aug. 14 at Southland Christian Church on Richmond Road to discuss plans for playground renovations at Jacobson Park.
The recently passed city budget includes as much as $300,000 to replace the Jacobson Park playground this year, and Lexington Parks and Recreation plans to get funding next year to replace a smaller, similar wooden playground at Shillito Park. The two wooden parks were built in the 1990s with the help of more than 2,000 community volunteers.
Some families who were involved in the original construction of Jacobson and Shillito parks and others have started an online effort to save the wooden structures.
Parks officials say the wooden playgrounds can be difficult to maintain because the wood splinters and rots. The playgrounds also don't meet new standards for accessibility for disabled children.
