Two sightings of bears in Jacobson Park were reported to the city this week, but state and Lexington officials have been unable to find any sign that bears were there, city spokeswoman Susan Straub said.
On Tuesday, a caller reported seeing two bears near the park’s dog park. Straub said the second sighting was Wednesday in the same general area of the park, which is off Richmond Road in southeast Lexington.
Wildlife officials from Frankfort were called in to search the area where the bears were sighted, and the city wants constituents to know that “we’re erring on the side of caution,” Straub said.
“The wildlife officials in Frankfort said it would be very unlikely to find bears in the park this far out of their home range, especially two bears together and in the winter,” Straub said.
