Mayor Jim Gray has declared Friday to be Firefighter Appreciation Day in Lexington.
More than 120 firefighters fought a three-alarm fire Saturday at the Blue Grass Stockyards on Lisle Industrial Avenue. In addition to the Blue Grass Stockyards, several businesses in the Lisle and South Forbes Avenue area were damaged or destroyed in the fire. It was one of the worst fires inside the city’s limits in decades. No one was injured in the fire whose cause is still under investigation.
Urban County Councilwoman Jennifer Mossotti asked city residents to show their support for Lexington firefighters in any way they see fit. “You can stop by any local fire station and shake a firefighter’s hand or perhaps drop off a thank you card to a station or leave some cookies or cake or other goodies,” Mossotti said Tuesday. Firefighters pay for food out of their own pocket when they are on duty, she said during a Tuesday work session. Mossotti also asked residents to use the hashtag #LOVELEXFIRE on social media on Friday to show their support for Lexington firefighters.
