Frankfort police are treating the killing of a woman in her apartment as a "domestic issue," Maj. Fred Deaton said.

Brian Reed, 41, was charged with murder Friday in the death of Gypsy Reyes, 28.

Deaton said police think "there at least at one point was some sort of relationship between the two." The investigation was ongoing Friday night.

Reyes was found dead in her apartment on Ewing Court, off Ewing Street in downtown Frankfort south of the river, shortly before 11 a.m. Friday.

A friend of Reyes, whom police did not identify, had been at Reyes' apartment Thursday night. The friend told investigators Reed came to the apartment "very upset," Deaton said, reading from the uniform citation charging Reed with murder.

The friend said Reed and Reyes went into a back room and began fighting. Reed later came out of the room and told the friend to get out of the apartment, Deaton said.

Reyes' friend asked her if she needed help, but Reyes told the friend not to call police, Deaton said.

The friend came back to the apartment Friday morning. Reed opened the door, and the friend could see what appeared to be Reyes' body under a blanket, Deaton said.

The friend called paramedics, who determined Reyes was dead. The state medical examiner had not established a cause of death Friday, but police said Reyes' body had apparent blunt-force trauma injuries.

Reyes' friend's statement "combined with numerous other factors" gave police probable cause to charge Reed, Deaton said. Reed was lodged in the Franklin County Regional Jail without bond.
