A Nicholasville family had a close call Saturday afternoon when their single engine plane malfunctioned during takeoff.
Bruce Bennett, 38, was piloting a 1967 Mooney and had just taken off for Miami from Stuart Powell Field in Danville when the plane lost lift, said Trooper Chris Lanham of the state police.

Bennett had already retracted the landing gear, so the plane settled back onto the runway on its belly, then skidded into a median between two runways, Lanham said.
Bennett's wife, Andrea, and their four-year-old child were also on board, but no one was injured.
