Jessamine County: Camp Nelson to honor African-Americans

The Camp Nelson Living History Weekend will feature the reading of General Order No. 20 at 9 a.m. Sept. 18. The order established Camp Nelson as a Union Army recruitment center for African-Americans in 1865. The reading will be followed by the muster-in of the 12th United States Colored Heavy Artillery, a reenactment unit that is based at Camp Nelson. The Living History continues until 5 p.m. Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday with artillery drills, cannon firing, music, and tours. Get more information at www.campnelson.org.
