A 12-year-old girl was seriously injured after falling 40 or 50 feet down a drop-off in Jessamine County Monday night.
The girl, whose name was not immediately available, was hiking with another juvenile near a dry creek bed on a farm at 2900 Newman Road when she fell at about 3:30 p.m., said Chief Michael Rupard of the Jessamine County Fire Department.
He said the girl landed on a rock bed and then fell another six to eight feet down another drop-off.
Rupard said the other child was able to call for help on a cell phone.
Rescue workers used ropes to haul the girl up, then carried her to a field, where a helicopter took her to the University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital.
Rupard said the child had serious injuries, but he thought that she would live.
