Seventy years ago, World War II came to an end with the surrender of Japan.
The occasion was commemorated Friday with a wreath-laying ceremony at The Lexington Cemetery.
Similar ceremonies were held Friday at Mills Springs National Cemetery in Pulaski County and at Bellevue Cemetery in Danville. Another is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday at Camp Nelson National Cemetery on U.S. 27 six miles south of Nicholasville.
While Japan's surrender came on Aug. 14, 1945, the formal surrender didn't happen until Sept. 2, 1945.
