The 14-year-old grandson of Eastern Kentucky University President Doug Whitlock died of a gunshot wound Sunday at University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital in Lexington.
Robert Douglas "Bobby" Whitlock Jr. suffered a gunshot wound to the head between 10 and 11 a.m. Sunday at his home. Police have not released any other details.
Bobby was pronounced dead at 5:34 p.m. Sunday, according to the Fayette County coroner's office. He was shot with a handgun, according to the coroner's office.
Grief counselors were at Clark Moores Middle School in Richmond on Monday to help students deal with the eighth-grader's death.
"We had district-level staff in place this morning at Clark Moores to help with any kind of grief counseling for staff and students," said Erin Stewart, spokeswoman for Madison County Schools. The school has an enrollment of about 550 students.
"Our district is extremely saddened by this loss, and we hope that the family knows our deepest condolences are with them," Stewart said.
Last week, Clark Moores Middle School had to deal with the loss of a teacher, William Dwayne Wells, 50, a physical education instructor, who died Oct. 18.
In addition to his grandfather, Bobby is survived by his parents, Robert and Casey Whitlock; a sister, Stacey Whitlock; his paternal grandmother, Jo Anne Whitlock; and his maternal grandmother, Angela Jett.
Bobby's funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at First Christian Church in Richmond. Visitation will be 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the church. Oldham, Roberts & Powell Funeral Home in Richmond is handling arrangements.
