EKU student killed in Richmond wreck

An Eastern Kentucky University student died Friday afternoon after being involved in a wreck in Richmond.

Madison County Coroner Jimmy Cornelison said David Nelson Lee, 22, pulled out of a nearby market eastbound onto Irvine Road when he was hit on the driver side by another vehicle as he was trying to cross the five-lane highway at 3:42 p.m.

Lee was transported to Baptist Health hospital in Richmond, where he was pronounced dead. He suffered head injuries when the vehicles collided, Cornelison said.

Cornelison said Lee's parents are in Texas, but he had grandparents who lived in Madison and Estill counties.

No funeral arrangements had been made as of Friday evening.

Richmond police are investigating the wreck. The weather may have played a factor in the wreck, as rain was starting to fall, Cornelison said.
