A Richmond man died Sunday night after being shot in the head with a rifle, and another man was charged with reckless homicide.

According to Richmond police, Richard D. Sirry, 19, of Berea accidentally shot Cody Dittman, 24, of Richmond at an apartment complex on the 200 block of Wayne Drive.

Police said in a news release that Zachary A. Redmerski, 21, who lived in the apartment where the shooting occurred, allowed Sirry to look at the rifle. It was loaded and the safety was engaged at the time, police said. At some point, the news release said, Dittman grabbed the barrel of the firearm and pulled it toward his forehead while Sirry was holding it; the weapon discharged, striking Dittman in the head. Police found him on the kitchen floor; he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sirry was being held in the Madison County jail.

Police said Redmerski was charged with third-degree unlawful transaction with a minor for providing alcohol to Sirry. Redmerski was cited and released.
