A former Madison County assistant principal who was charged with sexual abuse has been found dead in Virginia, WKYT-TV reported Monday.
Joy Alison Hayes, 43, was charged in October with sexual abuse of a juvenile, fourth-degree assault, tampering with a witness and unlawful transaction with a minor.
She had been an assistant principal at Madison Southern High School in Berea and previously had been principal of Lexington Traditional Magnet School.
The cause of Hayes' death in Lee County, Va., over the weekend remained under investigation, WKYT reported. Lee County, Va., is just across the Kentucky line.
The sheriff's office and medical examiner's offices there said they were unable to provide any information Monday night.
Berea police Sgt. Jake Reed said in October that police took reports twice that Hayes was harassing juveniles who were students at Madison Southern, then officers learned one of the juveniles had had sexual contact with her at a Berea home.
Hayes was not working at Madison Southern when the alleged offenses occurred, he said.
