Sandy Gruzesky, the head of the Kentucky Division of Water, was seriously injured in a one-car accident early Thursday in Scott County.
Gruzesky's Toyota Camry ran off Midway Road at the intersection of Creekside Drive, about a mile from the Woodford County line, and struck a large pine tree, Scott County Deputy Sheriff Jeremy Nettles said.
Gruzesky, 43 and a resident of Scott County, was in critical condition Thursday night at University of Kentucky Hospital in Lexington, a hospital spokesman said.
Nettles said that Gruzesky apparently fell asleep at the wheel or had a medical emergency, as there were no marks indicating braking on the roadway.

Authorities were called to the scene by a passerby who spotted the wreckage shortly before 6 a.m.
Nettles said the passerby was a nurse and was with Gruzesky when authorities arrived. He said Gruzesky was unresponsive when he got to the scene and he did not know whether she had been wearing a seat belt.
Gruzesky, a civil engineer who has been with the Division of Water since 1994, became director of the division last year.
