Frankfort man killed in collision after driving wrong way on I-64 in Scott

A 19-year-old Frankfort man was killed early Sunday morning when the Toyota minivan he was driving the wrong way on I-64 in Scott County struck a semi-truck owned by UPS, according to the Scott County sheriff's office.

The sheriff's office said Zachery Riley was thrown from the van and was pronounced dead by the Scott County coroner's office at about 3 a.m. Sunday at mile marker 70 on I-64 near the Fayette County line.

The sheriff's office said Riley was driving eastbound in the westbound lanes and was not wearing a seatbelt. Police said there had been several reports of the van traveling the wrong way but authorities "were not able to catch up with him before the collision."

The driver of the UPS truck, Herbert Woodie of North Carolina, was not injured, authorities said. Woodie told police he tried to avoid the van but it struck his vehicle on the passenger front wheel.

The collision remains under investigation by the sheriff's office.

LeCompte-Johnson-Taylor Funeral Home in Frankfort is handling arrangements for Riley. Visitation is from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at Bridgeport Christian Church in Franklin County. The funeral will be held at the church at 1 p.m. that day.
