A Georgetown College football player has died of a traumatic brain injury after he jumped down a flight of stairs at a fraternity house over the weekend.

Colson Machlitt, 18, also known as Johnnie, died at 2:38 p.m. Monday at University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital, according to the Fayette County Coroner’s office. Machlitt was a sophomore defensive lineman from Villa Hills in Northern Kentucky.

Georgetown Police Chief Mike Bosse said there is “an active investigation” into the incident.

Machlitt apparently hit his head after he jumped from one flight of steps down to another at the Lambda Chi Alpha house on campus, Bosse said. The three-story house off Hollyhock Lane near the quad has living space for 40 students, according to a Georgetown College website.

“We do suspect some alcohol involvement,” Bosse said. “It wasn’t that he fell, necessarily, but that he actually jumped. ...We’re working with the college. We’re trying to keep them abreast of what we find out and they’ve been very cooperative on their side.”

There is no suspected foul play, Bosse said.

Georgetown police were called to the scene about 12:20 a.m. Sunday, Bosse said. “When EMS (Emergency Medical Service) responded, we responded as well,” he said.

Monday was the first day of classes for the fall semester at Georgetown College.
