Versailles teacher's aide not charged after disabled child briefly shut in closet

Versailles police said Friday that they have not filed any criminal charge against a teacher's aide who closed a door on a child with Down syndrome who refused to leave a closet.

The 5-year-old boy went into the closet at South Side Elementary School at the end of school day on Jan. 28, Lt. Daniel Clark said. When the child would not come out, the aide closed the door for a few seconds, reopened the door, and the child left the closet, Clark said.

Contrary to an initial report, the child was not locked in the closet, and the door did not have a lock, Clark said.

Clark said police continue to investigate other factors in the incident but he would not discuss them. Once done investigating, police will consult with the county attorney, Clark said.

Woodford County schools Superintendent Scott Hawkins said the aide was initially suspended with pay, but he declined to say the aide's current status. The results of the school district's investigation were consistent with police findings, he said.
