Woodford County briefs: Young builders vie for prizes in NAWIC competition

Fifteen children participated in the Bluegrass Chapter of the National Association of Women in Construction's annual Block Kids competition with the after-school program at Huntertown Elementary School in Versailles on Oct. 25.

Hunter Penn won a $60 gift card for his first-place finish, Zachary Stiefel won a $40 gift card for second place, and Micah Spradlin a $20 gift card for third place.

Hunter's project was a wrecking ball and machine complete with exhaust stack, tracks and a dumpster for debris. Hunter will now compete in the regional Block Kids competition.

Woodford County Judge-Executive John Coyle and McKinney Painting estimator Roberts Comley served as judges along with NAWIC members Debra Shockley of Ross Tarrant, Kerry Hickman of Johnson Controls Inc., Elaine Boyd of Clay Ingels Co., Medearis Robertson of Kentucky Occupation Safety and Health Surveillance Program, Jenny Leitch of Staggs and Fisher, and Pam McKinney of McKinney Painting. The gift cards were donated by Kim Hellmueller and GCCS Inc.
