One person was killed in a fiery three-car crash Monday afternoon on Versailles Road near Westmoreland Road, according to the Fayette County coroner.
Coroner Gary Ginn said he was unable to determine the gender or name of the person who died because the car was badly burned.
Lexington police Lt. Clay Combs said three people were taken to the University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital, and one person was taken to Baptist Health Lexington. As of Monday night the extent of their injuries was not known.
Combs said it appeared that two cars crossed the median and hit the third car head-on. The cars went through a series of spins before two of the cars were engulfed in flames. The third car was flipped on its top, he said.
The crash happened at 3:56 p.m.
Versailles Road, which was closed for several hours, reopened about 8:30, Combs said.
Investigators, including the police department's Collision Reconstruction Unit , were at the scene gathering evidence and taking witness statements.
