About three hours after responding to gas station robbery on East New Circle Road, a Lexington police officer on patrol recognized the suspect walking near downtown, according to police.
An armed robbery of the Speedway at 447 East New Circle Road was reported about 12:45 a.m. Thursday. A clerk told investigators that an older man had entered the store, taken a soft drink to the counter, then demanded cash from the register while brandishing a firearm, according to police.
Anthony J. Davenport, 50, who allegedly ran from the robbery with cash, was then spotted in the area of Seventh Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard by one of responding officers, according to police.
Davenport was charged with first-degree robbery and possession of a controlled substance, according to police. He is being held in the Fayette County jail.
