Laurel County deputies kill man after he shot at them, state police say

Laurel County Sheriff’s deputies shot and killed a 45-year-old London man Sunday after he shot at them and refused to drop his weapon, Kentucky State Police said.

The shooting occurred four miles south of London on Kentucky 229 around 2:46 p.m. Sunday. Kentucky State Police Trooper Lloyd Cochran said Laurel County Sheriffs deputies were called to a home in a residential area after reports of a male outside his home shooting a gun. When deputies got to the scene, they told Anthony S. McDaniel, 45, to drop his weapon.

McDaniel refused and shot at the officers, hitting a police cruiser, Cochran said. The deputies shot at McDaniel and killed him. McDaniel was pronounced dead at the scene, Cochran said.

Three Laurel County Sheriff’s deputies have been placed on administrative leave as the investigation into the shooting continues, Cochan said. Kentucky State Police Critical Incident Response Unit is investigating the shooting.
