A state police officer shot and killed a man during a confrontation in Knott County Thursday night, according to a news release.

Troopers had gone to investigate a report that a man with a gun was walking on a road in the Pine Top community and threatening to shoot anyone who came around his house, state police said.

The first trooper to arrive saw a man in the road who matched the description. The trooper stopped some distance from the man and tried to talk to him, the release said.

The man had his hands behind his back and refused to show them to officers, then started to swing his right arm around in what police described as an aggressive manner.

One trooper fired three shots at the man, hitting him at least twice, according to a news release. Police officers provided medical aid to the man, but he died before an ambulance arrived.

State police did not immediately release the name of the man who was shot, or the names of the troopers involved.

The troopers were placed on administrative assignment during the investigation, which is standard.
