Georgetown shooting victim in fair condition; alleged shooter charged

GEORGETOWN — A man who was shot in the back Thursday afternoon when he tried to break up a fight between his uncle and brother was listed in fair condition Friday at University of Kentucky Hospital.

Brandon Smith was shot once with a pistol about 1:55 p.m. Thursday when he tried to break up the fight between his brother, Daniel Smith, and their uncle, Hamon Miller, 38, of Sadieville.

Police say they don't know why the men were fighting, but think there might have been a lingering dispute.

Georgetown police Capt. Scott Starns said Brandon Smith was probably not the target.

Miller has been charged with second-degree burglary and fourth-degree assault. A woman said that Miller was not invited into the house and that relatives repeatedly asked him to leave. But Miller stayed in the home at 330 Chambers Avenue and assaulted his nephew, according to a police report.

Miller was being held Friday at the Scott County jail on a $20,000 cash bond.
