Judge schedules sentencing for Ballard

PARIS — A judge has scheduled sentencing for a Bourbon man convicted of sodomizing and killing a 6-year-old Winchester boy two years ago.

In hearing Thursday morning in Bourbon Circuit Court, Judge Rob Johnson set Lewis "Buck" Ballard's sentencing for Jan. 14.

Last month, a jury found Ballard guilty of sodomizing and killing Wesley Dylan Mullins, whose body was found Aug. 4, 2007, in his grandfather's garage on Main Street in Paris. Ballard was the grandfather's roommate.

The jury recommended that Ballard, 51, serve life in prison without possibility of probation or parole. The judge is not bound by the jury's recommendation but may not impose a more severe sentence.

After Ballard's conviction, defense attorney La Mer Kyle-Griffiths said she planned to appeal the verdict. She maintained that Ballard is innocent.
