Man found with slain Carter woman's car; county has 3 homicides in a week

State police have filed charges against a man found with a vehicle that they say belonged to one of two homicide victims in Carter County.

David J. Caudill, 33, was found in Olive Hill with a vehicle that had belonged to Virginia Massard, state police said.

Massard, 49, and Joseph Cox, 27, were found dead in a home on Mocabee Creek in Carter County on Monday, state police said.

Caudill has not been charged in the slayings.

He was taken to the Carter County Detention Center and charged with receiving stolen property, operating a vehicle while under the influence, driving on a suspended license, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, being a persistent felony offender and flagrant non-support.

State police said they also are investigating another homicide in Carter County.

Troopers conducting a welfare check Monday discovered Calvin D. Fannin, 51, dead of apparent gunshot wounds at a home on North Anglin Branch, according to press releases.

An autopsy was scheduled to be conducted at the state medical examiner's office.
