Woman pleads guilty to manslaughter in pedestrian-death case

A woman accused of hitting and killing a pedestrian in 2007 pleaded guilty Wednesday to second-degree manslaughter and driving under the influence.

Sheila A. Whitler was driving a silver Porsche when she hit John Vice, 31, while he was crossing Man o' War Boulevard near Lyon Drive in November 2007. Vice later died from his injuries.

Whitler had been on trial in Fayette Circuit Court since Monday before she accepted a plea agreement. Prosecutors have recommended a seven-year sentence. Whitler is scheduled to be sentenced Dec. 18.

Vice's estate filed a wrongful-death lawsuit against Whitler in 2008 for her role in Vice's death. Whitler denied the allegations in her response to the lawsuit. The case is pending.
