Man indicted in slaying at Lexington gas station

A Lexington man has been indicted in the shooting death of another man at a gas station in September.

A Fayette County grand jury indicted William Sylvester Thornton, 24, Tuesday on charges of murder, possession of a handgun by a convicted felon and being a persistent felony offender.

Police say Thornton shot Michael S. Hanley, 19, of Lexington during an altercation Sept. 13 at the Shell station at New Circle Road and North Broadway. Hanley died at University of Kentucky Hospital.

Thornton is being held at the Fayette County jail. He is scheduled to be arraigned at 11:30 a.m. Thursday in Fayette Circuit Court.
