Big Sandy inmate sentenced for stabbing officer with feces-covered weapon

A Big Sandy federal prison inmate was sentenced to more than 15 years in prison for assaulting a corrections officer with a prison-made weapon smeared with feces.

Steven Michael Reid, 48, of Norfolk, Va., pleaded guilty in August to assaulting a corrections officer and possessing a prohibited object, according to the Office of the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Kentucky.

Reid admitted that he stabbed a Big Sandy corrections officer in the stomach on June 24 with a two-foot long spear-type object made of two rolled up magazines and a sharpened piece of Plexiglass. Reid had coated the tip of the weapon with feces.

Reid was sentenced to 188 months in prison for the attack. The sentence will begin after a 20-year sentence that Reid received in February for an assault on another Big Sandy employee.
