Former basketball star Bud Mackey pleads guilty to handgun charge

Jonathan "Bud" Mackey, a former Scott County High School basketball star, pleaded guilty Friday in Fayette Circuit Court to a misdemeanor charge of attempted possession of a handgun by a felon .

Mackey was arrested in May. Police said they found him with a handgun that was stolen from Franklin County.

Mackey faces a maximum sentence of a year in jail. He will be sentenced Feb. 5.

Mackey was the Sweet Sixteen's most valuable player while on Scott County's 2007 state championship team. He had planned to play basketball at Indiana University, but an arrest in September 2007 thwarted those plans. Police said Mackey had 1.6 grams of rock cocaine in his shoe when he was arrested at Scott County High School. He pleaded guilty in August 2008 to an amended charge of first-degree possession of a controlled substance.
