Hyden man is charged with failing to register as sex offender

U.S. Marshals and the Leslie County Sheriff's Office arrested a convicted sex offender on Tuesday and charged him with failing to register in Hyden, according to a release from the U.S. Marshal Service.

Thomas Maxwell Jr., 24, from Cincinnati, was convicted of attempted sexual battery in Champaign County, Ohio, in 2008 and released on parole in 2009, the release said. Maxwell moved from Ohio to Hyden in November to live with a woman he met over the Internet, according to the release.

Once in Kentucky, Maxwell failed to register as a sex offender and was investigated by the U.S. Marshal Service; in addition, Maxwell was being sought by Ohio authorities on an outstanding parole violation warrant, the release said.

Maxwell will also be charged as a fugitive from justice. He was taken to the Leslie County Detention Center, the release said.
