Man pleads guilty to reckless homicide in 2009 Lexington shooting

Steven James Wigginton, charged in the 2009 shooting death of Robert Jay McAlpin, pleaded guilty to reckless homicide on Monday, just before his trial was to begin in Fayette Circuit Court.

Wigginton, 29, had been charged with second-degree manslaughter in the case.

The shooting occurred early on Jan. 1, 2009, at a house on Southpoint Drive. Investigators said shortly after the shoting that Wigginton was "mishandling a firearm" when the weapon fired and the bullet struck McAlpin in the head.

Wigginton, who is being held at the Fayette County jail, is scheduled to be sentenced on Feb. 25.
