Lexington man sentenced in reckless homicide case

Steven James Wigginton was sentenced Thursday in Fayette Circuit Court to one year in jail for the January 2009 shooting death of Robert Jay McAlpin.

Wigginton, who initially was charged with second-degree manslaughter in the case, had pleaded guilty to reckless homicide. The shooting occurred early on New Year's Day at a house on Southpoint Drive. Investigators said Wigginton was "mishandling a firearm" when the weapon fired, the bullet striking McAlpin in the head.
